Should I trust AI agents with my client data and my work?

You use AI most days. But giving an agent autonomy over your data and your work is a different thing, and you do not completely trust it. Good. You should not hand anything over that you have not set limits on first.

How I set mine up

When I left the bank I lost my specialist network: the team that took a task out of a meeting and ran with it. You do not notice a function until you are it. So I built an AI workforce to replace it.

The first thing I learnt is that AI is a very confident guesser. My AI sounded like everyone else until I gave it a handbook: two files, one for what it knows about my practice and one for how it behaves. Every agent reads them before it does anything.

The second thing is where the line sits. My agents draft. I approve. None of them sends an email, publishes a post or charges anybody without me. When one gets something wrong, the fix goes into its written brief, so it does not happen again.

When I filed my expenses, the workforce did the matching, but I still had to supply the judgement. That is the right split.

What to check before you connect anything

  1. Decide what it can read and what it can write. Reading your notes is low risk. Sending from your email is not. Start with read and draft only.
  2. Keep client documents where your clients expect them to be, and check the AI provider's terms on whether your data is used for training.
  3. Give every agent a written brief: what it does, and what it must never do.
  4. Test every connection with something real, and read the result before you trust it.
  5. Keep one rule without exceptions: nothing reaches a client without you reading it.

Trust is built the same way as with a new hire. Small tasks first, checked closely, then more as it earns it.

For the tools and what they cost, read can one person run a consulting business with AI?
