Corporate to Solo
Scared to post on LinkedIn after leaving corporate? Why it feels harder than an exec committee
Present to an executive committee: no problem. Post on LinkedIn: absolutely not.
What will people think? What would I even say? I know. I have been there too.
I spent 16 years in banking, the last decade of it in senior HR and workforce roles across Credit Suisse and UBS. I spent a lot of time in rooms where senior people presented to an audience that could end their project in an afternoon.
They were fine. Nervous sometimes, never frightened.
Now I talk to those same people after they leave. Those rooms did not frighten them. Four lines on LinkedIn does.
What changed is the thing behind you
Inside a company you had a title. Whether you were worth listening to had been settled by the org chart before you opened your mouth, so you were only ever judged on the material.
On LinkedIn there is nothing behind you. No function, no deck with the company logo in the corner. Four lines, your name, and a reader deciding in about a second.
So when you say you cannot put yourself out there, I do not think you mean you cannot be seen.
You mean you have never been seen without the thing that made being seen feel safe.
Twenty years of being listened to, and none of it was practice for this.
It does get easier
If you have written a post and deleted it, this is for you. I promise it does get easier. I posted nearly two hundred times in the first nine months of 2026. I care a lot less today than I did when I started what people think of my LinkedIn posts, and I have had no negativity.
What made it easier was a system, so that Sunday stopped being a blank page. I wrote that up here: how to build a content strategy without a content calendar.
