Corporate to Solo

Everyone is going fractional or becoming a coach. How do I stand out?

It can feel as if everyone is on the road to becoming an entrepreneur, a fractional executive, an interim, a coach. If all of them are selling, how is there business for everyone? And how do you set yourself apart in a field that already feels crowded, without selling something nobody else understands?

Why the crowd is not the problem

I spent years in calibration rooms, where promotions and pay were argued. I was not the one deciding. I was in the room. If your manager cannot say what you do in one sentence, they cannot win that argument.

Inside a corporate, your value is a case somebody else makes for you. Solo, you make the case yourself.

A crowded field is a field full of people describing themselves by category: fractional HR, transformation consultant, leadership coach. Those are categories. Nobody buys a category.

Sell to a moment, not a market

Inside a bank, a headcount request with nothing behind it sits in the pile for a quarter. The same request with a trigger behind it, a team that has just lost its lead, an audit finding with somebody's name on it, moves in days.

Buying advice works the same way. Nobody hires a consultant because they are in financial services. They hire one because something has happened.

So you do not stand out by being better than everyone else in the category. You stand out by being the obvious person for one moment:

  1. Name the moment your buyer is in. A merger announced, a new boss, a first board role, a team doubling in a year.
  2. Name what goes wrong at that moment if nobody helps, and what it costs.
  3. Say it in one sentence. If three people in your field could say the same sentence tomorrow, it is not yours yet. Add the part only you have lived.

Is there a market? You find out by saying that sentence to people who are in that moment, and watching whether they ask what it costs. That takes a week.
